{"id":87,"date":"2005-08-13T14:48:30","date_gmt":"2005-08-13T18:48:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.dr-chuck.com\/wordpress\/?p=87"},"modified":"2011-12-17T12:18:03","modified_gmt":"2011-12-17T16:18:03","slug":"tuning-virtual-pc-on-my-mac","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.dr-chuck.com\/csev-blog\/2005\/08\/tuning-virtual-pc-on-my-mac\/","title":{"rendered":"Tuning Virtual PC on My Mac"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Notes on tuning Virtual PC on the Mac.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><br \/>\n(In VPC) <b> Settings -> Edit -> Set PC Memory <\/b> &#8211; set to 512 &#8211; let the Mac to the paging &#8211; see below.<br \/>\n<b>MyComputer &#8211; Right Click -> Properties -> Advanced -> Settings -> Visual Effects<\/b> &#8211; Set to &#8220;Adjust to best performance&#8221;<br \/>\n<b>MyComputer &#8211; Right Click -> Properties -> Advanced -> Settings -> Advanced -> Virtual Memory  -> Change <\/b> &#8211; Turn off virtual memory.  Yes &#8211; at some point when you run 10 simultaneous programs you will run out of memory &#8211; but since VPC is so slow you won&#8217;t want to anyways.  So for running 1-2 programs this allows the Mac to do the VM workather then an emulated 386 doing the swapping to an emulated disk.  This will also keep your disk image smaller by 3\/4 GB on the mac &#8211; why store all that paging space that is worthless bits when the XP OS reboots.<br \/>\n<b>MyComputer &#8211; Right Click -> Properties -> System Restore<\/b> &#8211; Turn this off.<br \/>\n<b>Right Click on Desktop -> Properties -> Desktop <\/b> &#8211; Set to &#8220;None&#8221; &#8211;  having an image in the background is silly.<br \/>\nDefragment your hard drive after you are done with the major stuff like windows update, etc.  I am not sure how this improves things &#8211; but the graphs look nice and pretty.
